U20 FC round up: Titles for Donaghmore Ashbourne and Rathkenny

December 03, 2022

Sean Purcell celebrates after scoring a goal for Donaghmore Ashbourne in the opening minutes of the Meath Under 20 FC final at Dunganny

Not for the first time this year Dunganny was a hive of activity under lights with large crowds turning up to see two U20 football championship finals.

Donaghmore Ashbourne were crowned Meath Under 20 Football Champions in the second game. Referee Padraig Coyle delayed the 8 o’clock start to allow the large crowd to get in to the Meath GAA Centre of Excellence.

The Moors were raging hot favourites but Trim had other ideas and led at the break 2-4 to 1-3, their goals coming from Ian Byrne and Conor McKeown.

Donaghmore Ashbourne took over in the second half and completely dominated. With 15 minutes gone the sides were level, 2-5 each, and when substitute Michael O’Sullivan fired home with five minutes remaining the writing was on the wall for a very brave Trim outfit. It finished Donaghmore Ashbourne 3-9 Trim 2-5.

The earlier throw in on pitch two saw a very good Rathkenny side finish their season in fine style with a 2-15 to 0-6 win over Jenkinstown Gaels in the D decider.
