Goals win matches as they say as St. Fiachs Ballinacree claimed the Allianz Meath Cumann na mBunscol Girls Division 5 football title for the first time with a point to spare over Cortown at Pairc Tailteann. PHOTOS

The Ballincree school got off to a flyer with two quick goals from Ava Blake and Hollie Curran. Points from the brilliant Molly Cassidy (2) and Kelly Woods kept Cortown in touch before goal number three arrived for St. Fiachs from Emily Farrelly. Cortown replied with a Mia Farnan goal and another Casserly point but Farrelly got in for her second goal before the break and the eventual winners took a 4-0 to 1-5 lead to the half time huddle.

The second half was only on when goal number five arrived for the girls in blue and navy, Hollie Crane finishing the move to the Cortown net. Cortown refused to lie down and, driven on by Casserly, they dominated the remainder of the game. The number 9 who had lined out with the boys team in the first game of the day scored three points and anoher Farnan goal narrowed the gap to the minimum and try as they might, coupled with some outstanding defending from St. Fiach’s, they couldn’t find the equalising score as the Ballinacree school held on to record their first title success.
