SFC relegation semi-final: Bracks crack O'Mahonys to stay up

October 01, 2022

Ballinabrackey's Danny Quinn

Ballinabrackey can look forward to a third year at the top table of club football following this decisive win over a poor O'Mahonys side at Trim on Saturday evening.

Ballinabrackey .......... 0-13
O'Mahonys .............. 0-4

The sun and blustery conditions made playing difficult for both sides. Ballinabrackey won the toss and opted to play into the elements in the first half.

With a structured approach they set about containing Darren Fay's side, limiting them to just three first half scores.

Duggie Dillon - who pointed twice from play in the opening half - was sent off in the 40th minute with O'Mahonys still in reach of Ballinabrackey.

The Bracks lost Damien Carroll to a similar sanction in the 58th minute at which stage the contest was long since settled.

Eoin Joyce's 40th minute close range pointed free proved to be O'Mahonys' sole second half score.

With the wind in their sails, Ballinabrackey closed out the hour with seven unanswered points.

Team captain Danny Quinn finished with five points from play, including the final four of the game.

The opening 30 minutes yielded just seven scores and a dozen wides. O'Mahonys found it difficult to capitalise on the wind blowing into the town goal.

Apart from a brief spell in the first half, after Duggie Dillon landed a brilliant point in the 18th minute, to edge O'Mahonys ahead - 0-3 to 0-2 - the Brews Hill side were always chasing the game.

It's a testament to the quality of Aidan Coffey's side that they responded with three points on the bounce to lead by 0-5 to 0-3 at half time.

Some of the O'Mahonys' contingent were unhappy with some of referee Cormac Reilly's decisions, but conceded that they had no bearing on the outcome on this occasion.

While Ballinabrackey can winter well with the prospect of senior championship football next year, O'Mahonys have a major task to retain top flight status when they face Seneschalstown in the relegation decider.
