The late Johnny Caulfield. Pic Carnaross GAA

Sad times around Carnaross with the passing of one of their greatest ever footballers, Johnny Caulfield.

With his footballing lineage Johnny just had to be an outstanding footballer. And he did not disappoint. He possessed those two feet, the skill, a great pair of hands, a leader on the field. The man with the stand out blond hair was so brave and courageous.

Carnaross G.A.A. remembered their hero.

It was with great sadness that members of Carnaross GFC have learned of the passing on Friday morning of one of our former players Johnny Caulfield.

Johnny was a complete sportsman and excelled at whatever sport he turned his hand to, be it Gaelic football, soccer, golf or snooker.

He came from a big Gaelic footballing family tradition. His father Paddy and two uncles Jack & Tommy Smith played on the Carnaross Junior and Intermediate Championship winning sides of 1955 & 1957.

Johnny himself was an outstanding young footballer and first came to prominence in 1967 when, aged 11, he lined out at full back on the Carnaross under 14 team which reached the juvenile championship semi-final.

He played for Carnaross most of his career except for a brief period in the late seventies when he played for Gaeil Colmcille C.L.G.

He was on the losing Carnaross Junior Championship sides of 1988 & 1989.

He represented Meath at underage and adult level and played for Meath in the National League in the late 70’s.

Johnny’s son Pearse continued his legacy representing underage and adult teams in the maroon and saffron hoops also.

Johnny also played hurling for a couple of years with Kilskyre and rugby with Athboy.

He lined out with Carnaross Utd. Soccer team and won a Division 4 league title in 1994.

He loved fishing and spent many an evening on the banks of the Blackwater near his home. Golf was another passion of Johnny’s. He was a member of Headfort Golf club and played there most evenings until the last few weeks.
