Senior camogie: O'Mahonys unlucky

Navan O'Mahonys lost out to Clann na nGael in the opening round of the senior camogie championship.

Navan O'Mahony’s were very unlucky not to gain the points in their first game of the Senior Championship against Clann na nGael.

While Navan O’Mahony’s dominated possession it was well into the first quarter before they registered their first score, a well taken point from play by Claire Mallon. Clann na nGael responded with a point from play, their only score in the quarter. While the O’Mahony’s forwards dominated the quarter they added 2 more points from play, one from Isabel O Connor followed by one from Aoibheann Leahy just before the water break.  Navan O’Mahony’s had a few missed opportunities in the quarter leaving the score at the water break at 0.3 to 0.1 in favour of the Navan side.

The second quarter saw Clann na nGael open the scoring with a point from a free followed by a point from play before Aoibheann Leahy responded with a well taken point from play .  Clann na nGael added another point from. O’Mahony’s put on more pressure and Katie Byrne added a point from play before Isabel O Connor who had a great game at no 10 added to her tally with another from play. Lizzie Brennan converted a free to add another point before Clann na nGael added one more before the half time whistle.   Navan O’Mahony’s led at the break  0.7 to 0.5

Navan O’Mahony’s opened the scoring in the second half with a point from a free converted by Lizzie Brennan . Clann na nGael responded with 2 points from play before the Brews Hill side dominated again and added a point from play from Aoibheann Leahy who had a great performance at no 11. Katie Byrne who had a great game then added two scores in succession, a goal and a point from play 

 Goalkeeper Mags Tomkins made some great saves and the backs defended well throughout. O’Mahony’s looked to have a comfortable lead heading into the last quarter with a scoreline of 1.10 to 0.7

Lizzie Brennan opened the scoring in the last quarter adding a point from a well taken free. But Clann na nGael came out with renewed determination and found the back of the Navan net. A free which they converted left the gap at just 3 points. A second goal from Clann na nGael brought the game to a draw and just in the last few seconds of the game it was Cln na Gael who managed to sneak ahead with a point and unfortunately time ran out for Navan O’Mahony’s. A great effort was put in by all and Navan O’Mahony’s were unfortunate not to secure the win here.
