St. Michaels 3-08, Oldcastle 3-14
Oldcastle took full advantage of playing with the aid of a strong wind in the opening half of this entertaining second round match of the SFC in Millbrook on Sunday afternoon to gain a decisive edge over St. Michaels and to collect their first brace of points of this years campaign.
Oldcastle had gone 2-3 to 1-1 ahead by the first water break and never fell behind thereafter, but the scoreline flatters them slightly as the game was there for the taking for St. Michaels but for some bad luck. St. Michaels opened their scoring with a pointed free from Sinead McCormack which was quickly followed with their opening goal from Megan Rogers who connected with a high ball in from Roisin Nulty. The visitors next attack on the Oldcastle goal resulted in Nulty being brought to the ground in the square as she was about to strike on goal, Marion Farrelly stepped up to strike the penalty but unfortunately it came back off the cross bar much to the delight of the awaiting Oldcastle girls who cleared it up-field.
Marion's luck deserted her for a second time when a certain goal chance went wide of the posts with the 'keeper beaten.
The second quarter was dominated by the home side who posted 6 points to a single score from St. Michaels, a well struck goal from Nulty after great work from Rogers.
Sinead McCormack opened the second quarter with a pointed free and two minors from Seona Lynch which reduced the deficit to five points but a lapse in concentration in the St. Michaels defence allowed the Oldcastle ladies back in for their third major and to restore their eight point advantage. Lynch converted another free and a great individual goal from Marion Farrelly gave her side an injection of hope they badly needed coming up to the second water break.
The final quarter was even Stephen with both sides adding three points apiece with McCormack (2) and Farrelly on target for the visitors.
