Navan O'Mahony's Ailbhe Leahy

Navan O'Mahonys 5-11 Summerhill 5-04

A fine team performance from Navan O’Mahony’s was enough to ensure two wins from two in the Intermediate Football Championship away to Summerhill this morning. Despite a slow start, it turned out to be a high-scoring affair.

The opening ten minutes of this second-round encounter turned out to be lack-lustre with ne’er a white nor a green flag raised for either side.  After twelve scoreless minutes, it was the hosts who got off to the stronger start with a goal. Undeterred, Ailbhe Leahy followed suit two minutes later, finding the net and levelling the scoreboard. A further two points before the water break left Navan O’Mahony’s with some wriggle room at the interval.

Again, the first minutes of the second quarter were quiet with no scores. It was Summerhill who opened the scoring with a point from play before minor duo Olivia Callan and Órlaith Mallon added to their tally with points from play. Summerhill responded with a point before Leahy scored her second goal of the day following a good pass from her sister Aoibheann in injury time.

It seemed that this would close out the second half but Mallon managed to add another point before the home side were awarded a penalty. A well taken strike, Navan O’Mahony’s netminder Ciara Blake had little chance and there was three points between the sides at half time.

Half Time: Navan O'Mahonys 2-05 Summerhill 2-02

In a similar pattern, the first half started slowly and it was seven minutes before a score was registered. The first score came from the hosts with a point from play. Navan O’Mahony’s were quick to respond with a goal from Mallon, who quickly cemented her sides lead within minutes with a well-taken point.

It was in the following few minutes that Navan O’Mahony’s really stretched their lead, when Callan scored three points from play, two of which came from passes from Ailbhe Leahy. Summerhill converted a free in the seventeenth minute to leave eight points between the sides at the second water break.

The game looked to be over as a contest when full forward Meghan Collins scored a goal from play, extending the lead to elven points. To their credit, Summerhill maintained their composure and never gave up. A well placed 21-yard free ended up in the net and this was followed moments later with a goal from play, more than halving the deficit.

Mallon again settled things for her side with a point from play before Callan added to her tally of points by raising a green flag. A final point from midfielder Tara Fay finished off the days scoring and Navan O’Mahony’s maintain their 100% record. They face Dunsany in the last round.
