Ladies JFC: Winning start for the Pats

September 20, 2021

The St. Pats squad

St Pats 4-12 Walterstown 3-9

St Pats travelled to Walterstown on Sunday evening 19th of September to take on the ladies from Walterstown in the 1st round of the Junior A Championship 2021.

It was the first time in a few years that these teams have met at Adult level, but we knew from the hard fought battles we had at under age level down through the years that this would be a strong test to open the 2021 Championship.

Indeed it was the Walterstown girls that struck first with a very well taking point from distance, it took the pats ladies a while to settle and that settling point came from the boot of Becky Harney in the 10th minute, Becky quickly followed up with another point and then Jade Geraghty got in on the act with a point of her own. The next play would see a Walterstown on the attack but a great turn by Katie Dowling and some great team work that ended up with Emma White finding the back of the net for the Pats opening goal, the Pats were in a grove now and two more points from Becky Harney and one each from Emma White and Ellen grant who also Followed up with a very well taking goal would see the Pats girls go in at half time on a score line of St Pats 2-7 to 1-2.

It was more of the same from the restart as Megan McCormack hit a stunning goal from distance, this was followed up by a point each from Ciara McQuillan and Tori Foster and when Robyn O’Byrne hit the back of the net you could be forgiven if reading this that the game was over!

However Walterstown had different ideas and this is Championship football after all, when the ball was thrown in after the last water break the Walterstown ladies threw off the shackles and  really went for it with two goals on the bounce and some very well taken points would see them reduce the margin to 6 points by the end of the game and if it wasn’t for the heroics from Goalkeeper Katie Brangan, and backs Laura Brangan Laura Baxter, combined with the work rate of Ciara Rothwell Aishling burke and Sarah Mc Donald to mention just a few this could have been an even more nail biting end to the game than it already was.

That been said a win is a win and more importantly it’s 3 valuable points on the board! Final Score St Pats 4-12 Walterstown 3-9.
