SFC 'Hill' on a roll

Summerhill's Adam McDonnell

Summerhill 1-18 Skryne 1-12

Six weeks ago Summerhill came to Moynalvey and were beaten comprehensively by the home side in the Feis Cup. On that occasion the tight confines of the Summerhill Road pitch certainly hampered the Hill style of play. However, any ‘nefarious’ intentions of a similar outcome by fixing this SFC Group D game against Skryne game in Moynalvey came to nought. For apart from a third quarter of Skryne dominance, Summerhill’s performance was miles ahead of their last outing. They started and finished strong, eight different scorers made their mark and the men of the Hill secured a place in the quarter finals with a game in hand.

It took just a minute for Summerhill to get on the scoreboard. Padhraig Geraghty was the finisher of a fast paced move to get off the mark. The returned Aussie was like a wallaby for the whole game, up and down the pitch all day and converting another close in effort before the half ended. Conor Lyons was flawless on frees (2) and added 2 from play for good measure before being replaced by Diarmuid McCabe on 42 minutes.

McCabe himself scored a beauty with literally his first touch of the ball, having hardly laced up his boots. He added another 3 minutes later. The Frayne brothers were industrious all through. Eoghan scored four,  from play and frees, one monster from the ground about 45 meters out and a great score off the left foot from near the sideline on 26 minutes. Conor bagged three, two from play and a mark. Adam McDonnell, who lined out at corner back,  got on the end of a great move which started in the full back line to drill a low shot to the net on 49 minutes. That score stretched the lead to 7 points, and it soon became 9 points with two rapid points from play by Conor Frayne.

Skryne weren’t finished yet however and a fortuitous goal from a defensive mixup on 54 minutes reduced the deficit somewhat. They got it back to four but that was as good as it got and Summerhill closed out the game with the final score coming from John Keane, who was in the right place to grab a ball that came off the upright and drive over with the goal at his mercy.
