St. Vincents 1-9 Gaeil Colmcille 0-7

St. Vincent’s won their first premier championship game thanks to a mixture of youth and experience on a wet evening in Masterson Park, Ardcath.

The game started off with both teams trading points with Pat Savage and Conor Early getting their first points for St. Vincent’s in the opening quarter, to leave it all square at the first water break at two points each.

Eric Callaghan got a pointed free in the 18th minute.  Gaeil Colmcille’s scored 3 frees in the early 2nd quarter to go 0-5 v 0-3 ahead. Just before half time came the decisive score of the game, Eric Callaghan caught a high ball in the square only to be taken down, a penalty was awarded and Eric stepped up himself to score.  Eoin Hand scored a quick point to leave it 1-4 v 0-5 at half time. 

The second half began where the first left off with St. Vincent’s dominating mid-field through Mo Carberry and Stefan O’Neill both having fine games. Conor Early added another fine point followed by substitute Nigel Hand scoring a point.   St. Vincent’s were creating a lot at this time but missing quite a bit also. Paddy Arnold scored a point which came from a goal shot hitting the post.  Paddy won the rebound and put it over the bar. 

In the last quarter the Kells men came looking for a goal and a superb save from Evan Connor denied them to keep the Vincent’s ahead 1-7 v 0-6. Two more points for St. Vincent’s one from Paddy Arnold and one from substitute Adam Tuite, saw them finish the game strongly and deserving winners 1-9 v 0-7.

Fine displays from debutants Pat Savage, Conor Early, Alex McEntee, Dylan Kavanagh and Michael Young means the future looks bright for St. Vincent’s.
