Navan O’Mahony’s 1-07 St. Colmcilles 3-13

The sun was shining in Piltown on the longest day of the year but that didn’t reflect O’Mahony’s fortunes in this second round of the Division 2 league.

St Colmcille’s got off to a flying start, raising a white flag after only 37 seconds. Continuing to dominate the first quarter, they had four points on the board by the eighth minuxte. In the ninth minute, the visitors had an opportunity to bring themselves back into the game but the St Colmcilles keeper pulled off a great save to ensure her side stayed four points adrift.

Things didn’t improve for O’Mahony’ in the next few minutes with the East Meath side adding a goal and an additional two points before Órlaith Mallon opened up the scoring for O’Mahony’s. The score at the water break read 1-06 to 0-01.

The water break did the Navan side good with Mallon adding a second point to the tally, converting a free from a foul on Jacinta Maher. Meghan Collins stuck the ball in the ‘Cilles net to bring the sides the closest they came in the game, 1-06 to 1-02. St. Colmcilles recovered again to leave the half time score 1-08 to 1.02.

Again, Mallon opened up the scoring in the second half, pointing within two minutes of the restart. The ‘Cilles responded with three points of their own before Collins again split the posts. O’Mahony’s backs cleared some great balls but the Colmcilles defence were very strong and always ready for the counter attack.

A second goal for the hosts killed off the game as a contest but the Navan side did not give up and Olivia Callan followed up immediately with a point just before the first water break. The second half water break score was 2-11 to 1-05

Following the water break, goalkeeper Ciara Blake pulled off a great save and prevented St. Colmcilles from extending their lead.  Callan and Jacinta Maher both pointed in the final quarter and a late goal from the hosts left a deficit of twelve points at the finish 3-13 to 1-07.
