Premier Football Division 8 final: 'Moors' master O'Mahonys

Donaghmore-Ashbourne claimed the inaugural Premier Division 8 title at Pairc Tailteann on Sunday when running out decisive winners over O'Mahonys in the covid-delayed 2020 final

Don/Ashbourne ............ 3-9
O'Mahonys .................. 1-8


Two final quarter goals ultimately settled matters. The scores were tied four times including at the second water-break when it was 1-8-each.

Despite playing into the breeze blowing diagonally from the town end, Donaghmore-Ashbourne added 2-1 without reply in the time remaining to claim the Jack Devine Cup.

Joe Magee's standout solo effort broke the deadlock for the final time in the 50th minute. Two minutes later sub Colm O'Toole netted from close range at the end of a move he started. Josh Corcoran and Danny Deery were also involved.

With that score the contest flatlined before Donaghmore-Ashbourne midfielder Rodney Jones concluded the scoring with a point in the first minute of stoppage time.

Donaghmore-Ashbourne captain James Flavin is the first recipient of the Jack Devine Cup, which honours the popular Dunderry-man who served his club with distinction.

By this stage O'Mahonys were down to 14-men after Jamie Murray was black carded in the 57th minute.

Both sides registered some quality scores. Murray's 35th minute point levelled matters for the penultimate time, 1-7-each.

Oisin Gryson's 19th introduction for Sam Dobbins improved matters for Donaghmore-Ashbourne.

O'Mahonys were undermined by 10 second-half wides. In the 39th minute The Moors 'keeper Matt Davis saved brilliantly from Ben Forde after Sean Walsh's effort hit the frame of the goal with the teams level.

O'Mahonnys opened well, responded positively to the concession of two early points. Boosted by a Jack Flynn goal, Sean Walsh enhanced their title bid with a brace of points.

Donaghmore-Ashbourne trailed by two points at the first water-break, 0-3 to 1-2. Lifted by James McKeown's 25th mnute goal they turned around tied with O'Mahonys, 1-6-each.
