Tailteann Cup: two from two for the 'Wood'

Cortown 1-9 Kilmainhamwood 2-11

Kilmainhamwood made the short journey to Cortown for the 2nd round of the Tailteann Cup and made it 2 wins from 2 for Stephen Smith and his management team.

The game started out hard hitting with good blocks from Harry Corbally and Paul Carolan keeping things tight at the back, while Niall Conlon and a Paudi Owens free meant it was 2-2 at the first water break.

The next 15 minutes proved the decisive point in the game as two goals put daylight between the teams. The first goal came when quick thinking from Jamie Fagan from a free found Brian Cassidy who was racing forward, Cassidy flicked it to Owens who waited for the ball before he tapped it by the keeper in a soccer style that Damien Duff would be proud of. The second goal came when Cian Gillespie ran the through the centre of the Cortown defense like a Bull in Pamplona before he shot at goal, this was saved but David Russell palmed home the rebound to put 7 between the sides.

Soon after Odhran Keoghan suffered what looked like a nasty injury. The Wood were temporarily down to 14 and conceded a sloppy goal just before half time

After the restart Cortown reduced the deficit to just 2 points after two quick scores. But Alan Carolan who replaced Keoghan, kicked a superb long range point to increase the gap to 3. Niall Conlon then started to run through the Cortown defense kicking some good scores and also getting fouled at times, as Niall Bennett kept the Woods tally ticking over with 4 frees in the game. At the last water break there was 5 points between the sides

The last major action came when Cortown were given a penalty and the Wood reduced to 14 due to a black card with ten minutes to go. With 5 points in it a goal would have left just 2 between the sides, but Damien Russell dived low to his left and saved brilliantly. In truth this ended the game as the Wood got men back and Cortown couldn't reduce the deficit much.
