For 23 years Sean Boylan faced the media in good times and bad as Meath manager. The Dunboyne herbalist was always sincere and honest in his after match comments.
We go back to 1997 when Meath and Kildare met in that three game epic Leinster semi final. The Royals came good in the second replay but at a cost.
"I think I’ll have to use jump leads to get them going after that”
It was a great football match and a great spectacle, and it brought tremendous credit to both teams. There were plenty of mistakes and a great fervour about the game. Even the referee got cramp. The players kept it going, if anything, and the pace of the game really picked up towards the end.
People were asking was this a tired team and I think they answered that today.
They’re tired now but if I ran for seventy minutes and then had to do another half an hour I think I’d be tired. We knew it would be difficult. Kildare are a very good side and they made us work very hard”
(Sean after the epic 2nd draw Meath 2-20 Kildare 3-17)
“We are seriously depleted now. It is a hugh relief to be in the Leinster Final but a desperate sickener to have three players suspended.
The statistics may say it was a dirty game, but you know the saying about lies and damn statistics.
Thing is lads, these are amateur players who want to win and qualify for a Leinster Final. In the heat of battle anything can happen, things that are not planned for.
Certain people enjoy criticising Meath. If people want to call us dirty there is nothing I can do about that.
All I’ll say is I am in this dressing room with a great bunch of players”
(Sean on the suspensions after the third game, Meath 1-12 Kildare 1-10)
