It was on this date 29 years ago that the most famous Leinster Senior Football Championship came to an end. After a marathon eight games Meath were crowned champions on August 10th 1991.
The campaign began on June 9th with the first of the draws against Dublin.
Over a month later and another draw this time with Wicklow. There was no let up for Sean Boylan’s charges and a week later the Garden County men were defeated 1-12 to 1-9.
There was only seven days rest again for Meath but it mattered not as Offaly were comfortable beaten 2-13 to 0-7 in the semi final. Brian Stafford hit a goal and six while John McDermott, on as a sub, raised the other green flag.
The Leinster final was played on Saturday in Croke Park in front of over 30,000 fans. Meath defeated Laois 1-11 to 0-8. It was level at the break 0-7 to 1-4. The Royals held Laois to a point from a free in the second half and went on to record a six point victory.
The win was marred however. A collision between Mick Lyons and Robbie O’Malley resulted in the All Star corner back missing the rest of the campaign and possible cost the team a deserved All Ireland title.
