Meath Hill 0-16 Longwood 1-11
Meath Hill and Longwood made a welcome return to Championship action last Saturday in Pairc Tailteann.
Meath Hill looked to capitalise on the breeze which was in their favour during the first half when Jason Yorke took the ball and casually stepped inside to send over the opening score. Mickey Burke then slotted over from a tight angle to draw the game. Meath Hill’s captain Ryan Owens then received the ball and, on the run, proceeded to send over a huge score. Two quick-fire scores from Jason Yorke either side of the water break allowed Meath Hill to extend their lead to three points. Longwood then missed a free, something which cost them dearly in the first half as four different free-kick takers missed scoring opportunities. Jack Mc Mahon and Kieran Slavin then combined for Slavin to point well on the run as he drew the ball in using the breeze to great effect. Jack McMahon then pointed, followed swiftly by a 45 which was coolly dispatched over the bar by Meath Hill goalkeeper Dominic Yorke to make the score Meath Hill 0-08 Longwood 0-01. Longwood then scored two points on the hop before Pierce McGrath and Jason Yorke pointed to leave the score at half time Meath Hill 0-10 Longwood 0-03.
The second half got underway and Tommy Rooney quickly had the ball in the net only for it to be ruled out as he did seem to catch the ball and throw it to the net. McGrath and Jason Yorke then pointed either side of a Ross Kerrigan score for Longwood to leave the score Meath Hill 0-12 Longwood 0-04. Pierce McGrath then helped himself to two scores, to take his tally to four points for the day. Longwood then very quickly pulled themselves back into it as the scoreboard read Meath Hill 0-15 Longwood 1-7 before a long delay after a collision between two of the Longwood players.
When the play returned Dominic Yorke came up the field to strike a beautiful free off the ground into the teeth of the breeze. Longwood seemed to fix their dead ball issues from the first half as Ryan Moore, Harry Hogan and Mickey Burke all kicked frees in the second half. Hogan then hit a beauty before the final whistle came with the final score Meath Hill 0-16 Longwood 1-11.
A really strong team performance for Meath Hill who now look forward to their second game in two weeks against a tough Ballinlough side.
