Bective 2-7 Longwood 1-6
Bective Jnr D team met the challenge of Longwood head on and delivered a well deserved 4 point win in Cortown.
Attacking from the throw-in Bective worked the ball up the field with Pauric Mc Connell finding space and timed his release to Neil Dowdall, who came from deep, to strike the ball into the Longwood net. Getting into good scoring positions was made difficult by both sets of backs, with David Keating, Adam Keating and great tracking from Robbie Corcoran, Mc Connell and Dowdall to the fore for Bective. Bective followed with 2 fine pointed frees from Michael Lyness, and points from play from Dowdall and Brian Donnelly. Longwood countered with 3 points for a half time score of Bective 1-4, Longwood 0 – 3.
Bective kept up the pressure in the second half but Longwood reduced the deficit to 3 points five minutes after the restart. Eanna Reilly was brought in and added extra speed to the Bective defence. Longwood were awarded a penalty of the soft variety on ten minutes and an unstoppable shot to the Bective net brought the teams level. Now the dog fight was on and brought heightened intensity from both sets of supporters. Bective stuck to their game plan and held firm in defence with good displays particularly from Ciaran Casey and David Fitzpatrick. A long high ball delivered into the Longwood square was cleverly pushed to the net by full forward James Davis. Lyness converted two frees and restored Bective to 3 points up. Ronan Murtagh and Ruairi Russell were brought in to bring fresh legs to the Bective attack. Longwood converted free kicks but could not get any closer than 4 points behind and Bective held on to finish with 2-7 to Longwood’s 1-6.
Bective will not meet St Columcilles on Sunday 29th in Duleek.
