IFC: Brave Trim leave it late

August 11, 2019

Trim's Conor Quigley keeps his eye on the ball during the Meath IFC clash at Pairc Tailteann

Trim 0-12 Syddan 1-8

On one of the worst evenings to play football that a lot of the small attendance in Pairc Tailteann have ever witnessed a young and brave Trim football team put in an hour full of courage, bravery, will to win and never say die attitude. It was quiet evident from the throw in that Trim were up for this match. From the throw in Trim gained possession and gave a quick ball into Alan Douglas who turned quickly, wrong footing his marker and kicked a lovely point over the bar. Then the very lively and hugely talented Aaron Lynch got the first of his six points from play in the fourth minute. Syddan with the aid of a very strong wind hit three unanswered points to take a one point lead by the eleventh minute. Two of the points were from play and one from a free. Alan Douglas got another great point in the twelfth minute, this point came from a punted kick pass to Alan’s chest from James Toher, Douglas collected the ball and turned his body to the left and slotted a right footed kick high over the bar from the thirteen meter line. Aaron Lynch then put the Red’s one ahead again  in the fifteenth minute, this score was a brilliant individual effort, young Lynch gathered the ball near the side line at the hospital end beat three men before creating a nice angle and kicked a wet and slippery ball over the bar at the Hospital end. Scores were hard to come by due to the conditions but in the twenty third minute Syddan took the lead again with a fine pointed free from the left boot of their number fourteen. This again brought the sides level on four points each with seven minutes to play in the first half. James Cullen was lucky only to see a yellow card emerge out of the back pocket of Referee Joey Curley in the twenty fifth minute. On the stroke of half time Aaron Lynch but the Town side up by a point with another great point from play. Trim had played against driving rain and wind in the first half and their management team of Brendan Murphy, Demo Dempsey and Mark Gilsenan had to be happy with the commitment from their charges in the first thirty minutes.

Half Time Score: Trim 0-5 Syddan 0-4

Syddan had to face into the elements in the second half but to their credit the notched the first score of the second half in the thirty second minute. The sides were level again for the third time. Trim hit a purple patch from the thirty third minute to the forty fifth minute scoring four unanswered points from play from the boots of Alan Douglas, Youngsters Conner Quigley, Brian Dowling and James Cullen. All four of these points were excellent efforts but the points from Quigley and Dowling deserve special mention. Quigley won a ball in his own half, gave a fist pass on the half way line, continued his run to receive the ball back and ran thirty meters before kicking a great point over the bar into the O’Mahonys end. Dowling’s point was a long range effort from thirty nine meters out, he took a great pass from Toher, turned on a sixpence and took a shot immediately, his shot sailed over the black spot with plenty to spare. Trim were now four points up with fifteen minutes to play. The team in red playing with the elements and working so hard that the small number of  Trim supporters in attendance could be forgiven in thinking that this match was in the bag. This was not the case as Syddan from north Meath had other ideas. In the next three minutes they would go on to score a goal and two points to take the lead by just one point in the fourth eight minute. In the forty sixth minute the pointed from a placed ball, from the kick out gained possession and gave a long ball into the Trim large square , the ball tossed, turned and bobbled before ending up in the back of the Trim net. The Team’s were level for the fourth time. From the Trim kick out Syddan again won the ball and kicked a long range point over the bar, the north Meath team wearing the famous Green and Gold hooped jerseys were now on top and looking to close this game out. Young Lynch again scored a point form play to draw the side’s level for the fifth time in the fifty first minute. Syddan went one ahead with a lovely point in the fifty third minute. In the last seven minutes Trim finished the game stronger and scored the last two points of the game, these two points came from play from the boot of Aaron Lynch. Two great points from the eighteen year old. Syddan tried hard to forge an equalising point in the last three minutes but were thwarted time and time again by an excellent Trim defence. With one minute and thirty eight seconds of additional time played Joey Curley blew the final whistle to the delight of the Trim team, management and loyal but few spectators. This win gives great hope of progressing in the championship  with all to play for in the final two group matches against Castletown and St Michaels.

The Trim management will be very happy with a lot of what they witnessed in this match. The return of injury plagued James Toher is a huge bonus to the team and he gave a very assured strong performance in the number six shirt last evening. Ciaran O’Rourke also returned from injury to have his first outing in either code this season,O’Rourke played well yesterday and this again is a real plus for Trim. At the back Trim look solid, Ger Dwane was motoring well before retiring at half time with an injury, Declan Dowling did a superb marking job on Syddan danger man Darren Wroe. Paul Munnelly gave a solid performance in the number seven shirt, young Ben Holden was lively on the other wing. Cian Downes put in an honest solid hard working performance in the full back line. Quigley was very good in the middle of the field and was assisted well by Robert Burke. Alan Douglas was superb for the sixty minutes while Brian Dowling can count himself unlucky to be withdrawn with fifteen minutes to go, it was great to see Dowling and selector Demo Dempsey having a hugg and shaking hands as Dowling left the pitch. James Cullen scored a nice point and is also returning from an injury , a lot more will be expected from him in the next two matches. Darie Lynch worked hard throughout the match. The last word has to go to Trim’s scoring chief Aaron Lynch, Six points from play on an atrocious evening for football says it all. In fact Aaron never got a chance to score from a placed ball during this match as Trim never received a free from scoring range for the sixty minutes. One has to wonder how the management of the Meath County U20 football team did not pick Aaron for a starting position in the championship games they played this summer. It actually beggars belief that a player of this calibre was left off the starting fifteen. There must be some outstandingly brilliant forwards in Meath U20 football if Aaron Lunch was left on the bench.

Syddan Report

TRIM 0-12 SYDDAN 1-8

SYDDAN are still seeking their first win of the campaign following this narrow defeat in Group B of the IFC at a miserable Pairc Tailteann on Saturday evening.

The conditions made the game something of a lottery but it was the town side who finished the strongest registering the final two points to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Corner forward Aaron Lynch was the Trim match-winner, accounting for six points, including the equaliser on 52 minutes and then what proved to be the winning score a minute later.

Syddan did have opportunities to at least snatch a share of the spoils but their finishing let them down.

There was little to choose between the sides for long stretches and the teams were level on four different occasions before Trim eventually led 0-6 to 0-5 at the break.

Trim added three further points by the 40th minute to open up a 0-9 to 0-4 lead. Daire Rowe went close for Syddan but his effort from an acute angle flashed wide of the target on 42 minutes.

Rowe pointed a free to narrow the gap and the Syddan goal eventually arrived from Cormac Rowe who found himself unmarked in front of the posts and he made no mistake from close range for the equalising score.

Kevin Traynor then added a point to leave Syddan ahead for only the second time on 45 minutes. Lynch responded with the equaliser and then missed a great goal opportunity as keeper Peter Sheehy produced a fine block.

A fisted point from Ryan Summersby put Syddan back in front on 51 minutes but they failed to add to their tally after that and it was Trim who produced a late burst to snatch a crucial victory.
