Walterstown's Alban Crosbie

Walterstown 2-7 Drumbaragh 2-7

Walterstown played host to Drumbaragh on a blustery Sunday morning. The pitch which was already wet was made worse by a sudden shower of sleet just before kick off. Between th estriong wind and the muddy ground conditions were not conducive for football. However both teams did contribute to  an exciting match. Drumbaragh got the first point after only a minute. They held onto tthe lead even though Walterstown kept them in their sights until the 25th minute when Drumbaragh scored a goal and point to finish the half 4points cahead on an scorelimne of 1-6 to 0-5.

In the second half Walterstown upeed their game nad narrowed the gap to a goal. However when they lost keeper John Davis to a straight red after 10 minutes their dreams of making a comeback looked dead.  Strangely however as sometimes happens Walterstown’s 14 men seemed to up their game while Drumbaragh seemed uncertain about how to use their spare man. In the 145th minute Walterstown’s John Geoghegan came to the rescue when his speculative long range effort slipped under the crossbar for an unlikely goal.

The teams were now level on 1-7 apiece. Walterstown continued to attack and when Aron McLoughlin’s underhit shot slipped past the Drumbaragh keeper they found themselves a goal up. Then Drumbaragh were awarded a penalty in the 29th minute which was duly converted  to leave the teams level.

Walterstown had several opportunities to score a final point but when referee Gerry O Brien blew for full time both teams were probably happy to share the spoils.
