March 10, 2019

Drumconrath's Daniel Byrne

Drums Win on the Road Again

In Clonard.

Drumconrath 1-11 Clonard 0-7

Drumconrath traveled with just 16 players to the other end of the County visiting Clonard's new pitch for the 1st time andfor the 3rd time in 2019 Drumconrath secured an away vicory. Clonard's new facility is a fine one with a top class sod in Sunny Cool and Breezy conditions.

Drumconrath started well with Daniel Byrne pointing a free as Clonard soon levelled with another free from their only scorer Niall Smullen. Drumconrath well on top at this stage pushed 0-4 to 0-1 ahead with points from Byrne (2) and Daragh Dunne, but had already at that stage had dropped five shots into the Clonard Keeper waiting hands.

Tomas Conlon had a great goal chance but blazed wide as the swirling strong cross pitch wide caused both sides problems.

The sides swapped points as Smullen made light of the wind problems with a free and this was answered by Stephan Crosby with 2 points. Smullen notched from play and another free but Drumconrath added the final point of the half with Cathal McEvoy fireing over to see Drums 0-7 to 0-4 at the break.

Clonard retired to the Dressing rooms and came out again in determined form with Smullen pointing from a free and from play to leave just a point between the sides and game on.

The cross wide seemed to effect Clonard as the hit 5 wides in a row when on top, there was no more scores for either side in the 3rd quarter but this was broken on 46 minutes when Patrick Farrelly point after a good Daragh Dunne run and some neat passing left Farrelly in space. Within a minute Drumconrath fashioned a good chance which was blocked but Robert McEntaggart pointed when gathering the loose ball.

In what was a productive 4  minute spell as on 48 minutes an off balance Daniel Byrne did well to find the top corner of the net. This continued as Corsby added a free two minutes later and Drums looked good for victory at 1-10 to 0-6.

Smullen through on goal but was hacked down unceremoniously which resulted in a Yellow card and a free which Smullen popped over in injury time. There was time for another goal chance but Declan Lafferty saved well and recieved a late challeged for his trouble which resulted in a brief samozzle as the calavery landed and both sides down to 14 men.

Drumconrath made one last attack with Farrelly was fouled and Crosby judged the wind perfectly and pointed from a difficult angle.
