Navan O'Mahonys Aodhan Mallon

Navan O'Mahonys 1-12 Donaghmore Ashbourne 1-11

O’Mahony’s got off to the better start on a cold evening in Dunganny. Aodhan Mallon put the Navan side on the scoreboard with a fisted point in the opening minute. In the following ten minutes, Ronan Clarke added another point from play before Sean Smyth and Evan Coffee converted a free each.  Ashbourne registered their first score after seventeen minutes which was quickly responded to with a point from play from Craig Munnelly.

Donaghmore/Ashbourne had the upper hand for the last ten minutes of the first half and scored four unanswered points to leave the sides level after 29 minutes. With the final kick of the first half, Donaghmore/Ashbourne found the net to lead by a goal at the break.

With momentum in Donaghmore/Ashbourne’s favour and the O’Mahony’s lads playing against a strong wind, they faced an uphill battle in the second half.  Donaghmore/Ashbourne opened scoring in the second half. The Navan men then rallied with points from Sean Smyth, Aodhan Mallon and substitute Brian O’Hanlon. Both teams added to the scoresheet and Sean Smyth soon pointed to leave the sides level again.

Halfway through the second half, Brian O’Hanlon found the net after a great run of play. This left O’Mahony’s with a lead which they were forced to defend to the last.  Another point left O’Mahony’s four points clear but Donaghmore/Ashbourne were not going to give in easily and with three minutes to play there was the minimum between the teams.

Aodhan Mallon stepped up to give O’Mahony’s an insurance point which proved to be vital as Donaghmore/Ashbourne pointed in the 30th minute to leave O’Mahony’s the victors by a single margin.
