Donaghmore/Ashbourne 2-13 Drumbaragh 2-14

Donaghmore Ashbourne's 4th team started their Junior D Championship run with a one point loss against an experienced Drumbaragh second team.

A 10 minute spell in the second half was their undoing as they conceded a controversial penalty and several frees to trail by 4 points coming up to the end of the game. A well taken goal by Sean Benville kick started a good passage of play by Don Ash in the second half. The loss of Oisin Mulhall to a red card early in the second half when they were on top only made them work harder. A further blow to the side was the loss of Josh Watters, who was having stormer when switched into full back, due to an injury after a nasty fall.

They ploughed on earning a well deserved free which was pointed by Colm O'Toole. Pressure from the Don Ash half backs saw the ball played to the ever young Adam Fitzgerald who dummied the corner back and fired in an excellent pass which led to a goal by James McKeown. This levelled the match with time almost up. As Drumbaragh launched one final attack, Don Ash desperately tried to defend and in doing so conceded a free in scoring range. Drumbaragh's marksman duly obliged with the winning point.

The game was played at pace and there were some excellent scores taken by both sides. Drumbaragh's keeper made two excellent stops in the first half  thwarting the Don Ash attack and despite some controversial decisions affecting both sides, Don Ash will feel aggrieved they had not got a penalty in the first half for a foot challenge by the keeper. The mixture of youth and experience on the Don Ash team played some fantastic football all over the pitch especially the young adult football championship debutants, Cormac McGahan, James Redmond, Josh Watters, Evan McGuirk, Joe Magee, Liam Byrne and Colm O'Toole.
