JFC D: Bective on top in low scoring encounter

April 16, 2018

Bective's Michael Lyness

Bective 2-3 Ballivor 0-6

Bective Junior D team enjoyed the dry ground conditions in Dunganny in this championship first round match versus Ballivor.

Ballivor started strong and looked threatening and opened the scoring with a fine point.  Bective with a slight diagonal wind advantage struggled to convert their opportunities early on but were creating plenty of chances. Bective leveled with a point from Michael Lyness before Jack Clarke intercepted a short kick out and confidently booted the ball to the back of the net. Pauric McConnell was introduced into the Bective attack and continually showed for the ball and linked well.  Half time score Bective 1-1 Ballivor 0-1.

Ballivor scored 2 points early in the second half and put it up to a relatively young Bective outfit but they continued to work the ball well up the field but were ineffective in front of goal with many missed chances.  However Jack Clarke took the initiative again and got on the end of a good move but was pulled down inside the small square.  Lyness dispatched the penalty to the net and a 4 point gap opened up.  Ballivor responded with a couple of points but Bective replied with a point by Ronan Murtagh from a "45".  The winners introduced Neil Dowdall who showed plenty of skill on the ball and Bective score a further point.

Ballivor, now running out of time, pressed for a goal but were held out by a strong Bective full back line, led by Gary Brennan, and can only manage another point before the final whistle.  Bective displayed plenty of enterprise and willing to do the hard running, particularly David Fitzpatrick, Donagh Garvey and Colm Barry, and should have been further ahead and not under pressure for the final 5 minutes.

Bective: Darren Killian, Greg Hogge, Gary Brennan, Brian Hogge, Shane Barry, Colm Barry, David Fitzpatrick, Ronan Murtagh, Mark Usher, Mark Walsh, Michael Lyness, Donagh Garvey, Ciaran Casey, James Davis, Jack Clarke.  Subs in were Pauric Mc Connell and Neil Dowdall.

Ballivor Report

Ballivor's second string were out in action against Bective in a blustery Dunganny on Sunday afternoon.

Playing against the strong breeze in the first half, scores were hard to come by. A nice flowing move ended with Paul Kelly slotting the ball over the bar to put the lads a point up after 8 minutes. That was as good as it got for Ballivor in the first half as Bective registered 1-1 without reply.

The 2nd half was always going to be an improved performance, and through the tireless  running of Paddy Conneely Ballivor launched a few attacks at the beginning of the half - unfortunately they didn't have the finishing touch required on the day to get their noses in front.

A 2nd well taken goal from a penalty for Bective, albeit a dubious decision, mid way through the 2nd half made the game an uphill task for Ballivor. Although the lads came back fighting after this with some nice scores from Clayton Keegan, Sean Heavey and Paul Farrell.

Ballivor would have been right back in the game had Clayton Keegans's 30 yard rasper not come off the top corner of the cross bar with the keeper left a mere spectator.

From here Ballivor were unable to get the scores required in the closing stages, with the final ball costing them on many occasions.

Although it ended in defeat, it was a promising display in parts and the lads can look forward to the year with optimism.

Best on the day for Ballivor was Paddy Conneely who never stopped in the middle of the field. Paddy Molloy also deserves a mention with a strong performance on his first game back in a long while.
