JFC B: Boardsmill left to rue poor start

April 16, 2018

Boardsmill's Niall Durkan

Boardsmill 1-7 Slane 0-14

Boardsmill travelled to Simonstown on Friday night to contest the first round of the junior B championship against Slane and it couldn't have been a worse start for Boardsmill as the went 2 points down in the opening 2 minutes and on the resulting kickout lost their sturdy netminder through injury resulting in losing their centre forward Thomas Leonard to be a back up keeper.

Things went from bad to worse as Slane pressed heavy and resulting in going 4 points clear after the first ten minutes!

Boardsmill steadied themselves and got on the score sheet through Keith Hamilton and again from Niall durkin to leave it 4 points to 2 but then Slane pressed again and registered 5 more points and with the end of the half looming Boardsmill broke down the field only to be denied be the upright from a Danny Dixon shot and the
resulting ball fell to Donal Flattery who slotted over to leave it 9 points to 3 to Slane.

The would be Boardsmill final score of the half and the remaining few minutes Slane tagged on two more points to go in at the half 11 points to 3. Boardsmill had to reassert themselves and came out in the second half and were first on the score sheet through Niall Durkin to try claw back in the deficit they were hard pressing the Slane defence but couldn't muster up any clear cut goal chances so opting to take their points they clawed back more with points from Cathal Wall and again
through Hamilton!

Slane's response was pointed a free just inside the 45 and another through loss of possession from the Boardsmill defence to leave it 0-13 to 0-6 with the introduction with Bert McLoughlin midway through the half he put himself around well an had a chance cleared off the line and as Boardsmill pressured the Slane defence once more it also resulted in another shot coming off the woodwork but with the game looming into the final ten minutes goals were needed an indeed it was Danny Dixon who broke the deadlock with a quick taking free from Niall Durkin fell to Dixon who slotted past the Slane netminder.

On the resulting kickout Boardsmill won it and it would be a well taken point from Bernard McLoughlin that proved to be Boardsmill's final score of the match as any other attack they mustered up was broken down well by the Slane defence and the final score of the game came from another pointed free from Slane to leave it 0-14 to 1-07.

It was a poor performance from the Mill with still lots of work still to do if they are to progress in this junior B championship.
