It’s been a case of so far, so good for Kevin McStay as Mayo manager.

The Westerners hammered a relegation-threatened Donegal in Ballybofey yesterday to qualify for their second Allianz Football League final in-a-row where they were will have a chance to atone for last year’s disappointing showing against Kerry.

"We're in the final now and are there on merit,” McStay told RTÉ.

“The league has been really good to us and we got an awful lot out of it. We needed something out of the game and used the two weeks wisely.

"A lot of prep was done and we took on the challenge full on. We were in a good place at half-time and the goal [from Ryan O'Donoghue] gave us breathing space. We're pleased to be in the final and we'll be having a good shot at it."

He added: "The division is competitive; the football is competitive and the panels are competitive. You have to be at your best; you have to be trying your best.

"Week by week is how this job gets done. There's a little prize today with a slot in the final and we're delighted about that."
