Moycullen proved too hot to handle for Westport this afternoon as they advanced to the semi-finals of the Connacht club SFC with a 3-18 to 1-11 victory in Castlebar.

Dessie Conneely landed 0-10 for the Galway champions while Daniel Cox, Owen Gallagher and Aidan Claffey supplied the goals in what was a comfortable victory.

Having landed the Mayo SFC title for the first time in their history last month, Westport enjoyed a decent start that saw centre-back Brian McDermott lashing in a goal in the early minutes before Oisin McLaughlin’s point had them 1-2 to 0-3 in front.

However, the home side wouldn’t score again for a quarter of an hour and a Cox’s goal had Moycullen leading handsomely at the break (1-11 to 1-4).

A Gallagher point stretched the Galway men’s lead to eight early in the restart and the same player would find the Westport net prior to Claffey doing the same on the eve of injury-time.

The winners now face Strokestown next weekend for a place in the provincial decider.
