Mayo county board chairman Liam Moffatt has paid tribute to David Clarke after he announced his retirement from inter-county football today.

One of the best goalkeepers in the game, Clarke gave 20 years of service to Mayo and made 133 appearances for the county at senior level.

The 37-year-old won eight Connacht SFC titles and two National League crowns in the green and red, as well as two provincial minor titles and three at U21 level.

Clarke was also selected twice at the All Star awards and, speaking on behalf of Mayo GAA, Moffatt praised the Ballina Stephenites man for his “outstanding dedication and performances” over the past two decades.

“On behalf of Mayo GAA I would like to thank David for his outstanding dedication and performances with Mayo GAA over the last 20 years,” read Moffatt’s statement on mayogaa.com.

“The platform for the consistency and longevity of David’s career has been delivered by so many countless unseen hours of hard work and dedication.

“As part of his journey he has also dealt with serious injuries and it is a testimony to his character to not only to have returned to play from these but to deliver the performances of the highest standard.

“Whether it be a training session, club game or an inter-county championship match David has always applied that same dedicated, meticulous approach and one for which we in Mayo GAA are very grateful for.

“Finally I wish David & his family all the best in 2021 and beyond.”
