Louth's Farrelly announces retirement

September 14, 2007
Louth midfielder Martin Farrelly has called an end to his intercounty career with immediate effect. Farrelly has been one of the Wee County's most consistent performers over the past decade. He captain the Reds to the 2006 national football league Division Two title and also won a Div. 2 medal in 2000. The former Lannleire clubman was on the St Josephs side that won the Louth SFC last year and has also had the distinction of winning Railway Cup honours with Leinster. At the age of 32, Martin has confirmed that this will be his last year to play gaelic football. He has been plagued by injury throughout 2007 and will hang up his boots once the club season is over. Louth manager Eamonn McEneaney was the first to pay tribute to his former captain: "Martin has been a great servant to Louth football. He was a brilliant captain and a great footballer."
