NEWTOWN BLUES 0-13

A dramatic end to this Group 4 clash at Darver on Sunday afternoon saw St Marys snatch victory over Newtown Blues thanks to a Daire McConnon goal and a Ciaran Keenan point.

The county champions looked set to pick up their second win of the group when they led by three points with time almost up. However, the Ardee men were not to be denied and levelled through McConnon before Keenan popped up to send over the winning score.

In a game where they Blues always appeared to have a slight edge, they led by six points for much of the second period but somewhat unusually they failed to finish off the game and paid the price in the end as the Marys made a winning start to the competition.

It was the Ardee men who scored the first point of the game through Ronan Carroll but the Blues soon took a grip and with Ross Nally, Ciaran Downey and Conor Moore on target they eased into a 0-5 to 0-2 lead.

Ciaran Keenan added to the Marys score but the Blues had the better of the game and at the break they were leading by 0-9 to 0-3 .

The Ardee men worked hard to get back into the game in the third quarter but the Blues kept them at arm’s length and appeared to be on course for victory when Andy McDonnell’s point had them 0-13 to 0-7 in front on 48 minutes.

However, the Marys kept plugging away and retained hope when Kian Moran, Carl Gillespie and Conor Gillespie cut the gap to two. A John Kermode point in the final minute looked to have settled the issue but the Mid Louth men had the final say with McConnon hitting the net to draw them level before Keenan landed the winner.
