SFC quarter-final: Quality shines through for Mairtins

August 19, 2019

NH MAIRTIN 4-13

ST MOCHTAS 1-15

Nh Mairtin booked their place in the Louth Senior Championship semi-final thanks to victory over St Mochtas at Dunleer on Saturday evening.

The Monasterboice men showed their quality once again as they came out on top in a high-scoring encounter with Sam Mulroy and JP Rooney catching they eye in front of the posts.

The margin of victory may have been a little harsh on the Mochtas who gave their all throughout the game but the Intermediate champions were unable to pull off a shock against a Mairtins side who have realistic ambitions of landing the Joe Ward Cup.

The Jocks got off to a flying start and after JP Rooney opened the scoring they had the ball in the net after two minutes through Stephen Campbell. Ciaran Byrne marked his return to action with the Mochtas first point but it was the Mairtins who continued to dominate and scores from Rooney, Mulroy and Conor Morgan helped them lead by 1-5 to 0-1 just after the end of the first quarter.

Eamonn O’Neill, Byrne and Ciaran McMahon were on target for the Mochtas but the Mairtins remained in control at half time as they led by 1-8 to 0-4.

Declan Byrne and Ciaran McMahon helped cut the gap to 1-9 to 0-8 after 36 minutes but the Monasterboice men responded in style with a goal from Sam Mulroy.

The Mochtas refused to give up and pulled a goal back when O’Neill forced the ball over the line. However, once again the Mairtins response was swift as they earned a penalty at the other end which Mulroy fired to the back of the net to make it 3-12 to 1-12 with less than ten minutes remaining.

The Jocks were always in control after that and they sealed the win in the dying seconds when Brian McQuillan added their fourth goal.
