DkIT win prestigious Trench Cup.

DkIT 1.14 Waterford IT 1.08

Oisin McConville  and Shane Lennon steered their Dundalk IT charges to a historic Trench Cup victory when they overcame Waterford IT in Jordanstown last Saturday beating them 1.14 to 1.08.

DkIT had been beaten finalists on three previous occasions in 1989, 1993 and 1997.

Having won the toss and opting to play with the strong wind advantage, McConville and Lennons side hit the ground running and were 1.01 to no score in front after 3 minutes thanks to a Declan Flaherty point and superb goal by Donal Meegan.

Unfazed, Waterford opened their account on the 5th minute and by the 8th minute had broken through the Dundalk rear-guard to fire past custodian Joe O'Donohue.

However Flaherty, Daniel McKenna and Dundalk Gaels man Gerard McSorley made sure Dundalk continued to keep the scoreboard ticking and went into the half time break 4 points in front leading the Deise side 1-08 - 1.04.

On the restart, with the wind in their sails the Waterford outfit began to tighten the screw and by the 53rd minute had reduced the deficit to 2.

But Dundalk would never relinquish their lead and with inspirational points from man of the match Daniel "Yankee" McKenna (2) and a colossal 45" from substitute Emmet Kirk the north east side finished by far the stronger to capture the prestigious title.

So, forty years after Dublin legend Brian Mullans lifted the trophy for the first time, along with the likes of Pat Spillane and Donegal's Damien Diver , Monaghan's Kieran Duffy and Dundalk IT captain accepted the cup to rapturous applause.

Speaking afterwards a delighted McConville commended the DkIT background team "This is 5 years in the making with lots of hard work going on behind the scenes. This has now really put us on the football map at long last and it's been really worth all the effort winning here today. " He continued " The college was coming from a low base numbers wise, but now with 7 county footballers on the panel and a scholarship scheme in place we have proved that we can hold our own with the best and push on now to go from strength to strength."

Shane Lennon spoke of the benefits this win would have for the future; " Last Saturday's win was an incredible achievement which has been building over the last few years. It's great to have success to go with the structures that have been put in place over the last number of years. This victory is something very special for a super group of lads. Third level football is very prestigious and it gives players an opportunity for them to showcase their talents on a national stage.

DKIT is an outlet for players to develop themselves academically and in their chosen sports field. This is beneficial to the growth and development of GAA in the county. This success is paramount in keeping the best talent in the county on our doorstep.  The Scholarship programme  has aided our development along with attracting players to the college and  I know this is something that we hope to continue to cultivate over the coming years"

He went on to say "On Thursday our Freshers team play Trinity College Dublin in the All Ireland Division 2 championship final. This would be quite a unique double if we were to create history in capturing these two titles in the space of a few days. Four of our Freshers GAA scholarships made substitute appearances in the Trench Cup final and were a key part of the win "

Fresher Div. 2 All Ireland Championship Final

Trinity College Dublin 3.07 Dundalk IT   0.12

There was to be no fairy-tale ending for Shane Lennon and the DkIT Gaelic Footballers as Trinity College got the better of the Freshers team beating them 3.07 to 0.12 in the Fresher's Division 2 Championship final played in Clan Na Gael Fontenoy Ringsend yesterday.

The old adage "goals win matches" certainly rang true as Trinity punished DkIT at crucial times. Their first goal came shortly before the half time whistle to bring them within a point when DkIT had dominated throughout and their second goal came immediately after the restart to put them in the driving seat.

From the throw in DkIT were in control and by the 6th minute had raced to a 0.03 to no score lead courtesy of Conor Doherty, Niall Kearns and Tadhg McEneaney.  Then against the run of play Trinity scored 2 points from placed balls to cut the deficit to 1 before scholarship student and Captain Emmet Kirk scored a massive 45 to put DkIT on the front foot again.

Points followed from Mc Eneaney and Cormac Daly just before Trinity scored the first of their 3 goals and by the interval the score board read 0.08 to 1.03 in favour of Dundalk.

Within the first minute of the second half Trinity had bagged their second goal to put them one ahead. Points from play from Mc Eneaney and Doherty clawed it back for Dundalk 10 minutes into the second half but then Trinity hit a purple patch and scored 1.03 without reply putting them 5 points adrift.

Dundalk left everything on the pitch as they cut the deficit to 3 to then go in search of the elusive equalising goal. However despite their best efforts the goal never materialised and it was Trinity who went down and sealed the victory with an insurance point.

This is the second year in a row that DkIT have been beaten finalists in the Fresher's All Ireland as last year Mary Immaculate College emerged victorious by a narrow one point margin.

Speaking afterwards Shane Lennon commented '" The lads battled very hard from start to finish but the ball just broke wrong for us today. The goal just before half time and directly on the restart knocked the stuffing out of us. It's a pity though as this really would have been the icing on the cake to a great year. However we have enough talent in this squad to push onto the senior team in years to come and build on the success of the Trench win "

Ladies Gaelic Football

Lynch Cup Round 2

DIT  - 4.15 DKIT -  2.12

DIT proved too much for the DkIT ladies football team on Wednesday evening last in Parnells when they were comprehensive 4.15 to 2.12 winners in round 2 of the Lynch Cup Championship.

After battling hard Dundalk were content going into the half time break just 3 points adrift at 1.04 to 0.10 despite going into the match without scholarship student and All Ireland club medal winner Niamh Callan from Donaghmoyne
Shauna Grey was on target scoring a goal in the 15th minute along with 2 points each from Leanne Maguire and Carla Rowe.
Cavan star Brona Sheridan was exceptional for the Dublin side scoring 8 out if their 10 points in the first half.

With 15 minutes remaining DkIT managed to draw level through a Carla Rowe wonder goal and points from Emily Norton, Alanna Conlon and Katie Anne Holdcroft with the scoreboard reading 2.08 to 1.11.

However this was as close as Dundalk got as DIT increased the tempo and finished stronger.

The DkIT management team of Sharon Courtney, Cian McCann, Kieran Daly and Aaron Geagan  now await the result of the UL v Tralee IT match to see if they're  still in with a chance of reaching the championship weekend.
