Wolfe Tones are Longford senior hurling champions after overcoming Longford Slashers

Wolfe Tones 3-10
Longford Slashers 1-6

Wolfe Tones captured their seventh Longford senior hurling champions crown in eight years this evening after seeing off Longford Slashers at a soaking wet Pearse Park.

The Mostrim club made their second-half goals count after trailing by two points at half, with back-to-back majors from Maitiu O’Donohoe and Evan Tully helping them cruise to the title.

It was Slashers that led by 1-4 to 0-5 at the half thanks to Paul Leonard’s goal in the 20th minute being backed up by Eoin Donnellan.

Two points from John Mulhearne levelled matters within two minutes of the resumption and the same man would steer Wolf Tones into the lead by the 35th minute.

Wolf Tones kept their foot on the throttle and got full value when O’Donohoe lashed home their first goal three minutes later.

Donnellan hit back with two points for Slashers but the momentum was fully with their opponents and they’d net again through Tully to make it 2-9 to 1-6 with 10 minutes left on the clock.

O’Donohoe stretched the lead out to seven and it proved to be that there was no way back for Slashers, as Daniel Connell hammered home the Tones third goal to put a seal on their 20th title.
