Sympathy: Dromard GAA is sad to note the passing of Peter Crossan, Fyhora, one of the best known and respected members of the club. Peter made an enormous contribution at all levels of the club over many years from his involvement with senior, U21, minor and schools teams in Dromard and he served in various capacities on our minor and senior executives. Peter also trained the Dromard ladies team for a period. Many of our current and former players will have fond memories of Peter from their time in Moyne Community School where he was a teacher and where he coached and mentored a large number of our young players. The success many of these players later went on to enjoy at club and county level owes much to Peter’s dedication as a trainer and his encouragement of our young players. The Club’s senior and U21 championship successes from 1999 and through the 2000s would not have been possible without his contribution to the development of our players. Peter was an esteemed member of our Club and his absence through illness in recent years was sadly missed. The Club offers its condolences to the Crossan family on his passing.
The club offers its sympathy to Maggie and the Farrell family, Fostra, and the Berry family on the death of Maggie’s brother Jimmy Berry, Fostra. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a n-anamacha.
In our note of condolences for the late John Dolan, Kiltycon in last week’s notes, we omitted to mention John’s brother, Fr Peter Dolan, Florida, USA. Fr Peter was a regular visitor to Dromard over the years and keeps a close connection with his native home. As mentioned by Fr Pat Lennon during his homily at John’s funeral Mass on Thursday, Fr. Peter was a very talented footballer for Dromard and Longford. Thank you to Peter Cosgrove, Cornakelly, who drew our attention to the fact that Fr Peter was a member of the Longford team that won the Leinster Junior Championship in 1953. James McNerney’s book From the Well of St. Patrick records that Peter lined out at centre field in the Leinster final before moving to centre-half forward and scored at least two points of Longford’s winning tally of 3-5 (to Kilkenny’s 1-5). Charlie Corr, Corglass also played in the Leinster final. With Peter again lining out at midfield, Longford defeated Derry in the All Ireland Semi Final before losing out to Cork in the All Ireland Final. We extend our condolences to Fr Peter on John’s passing and look forward to welcoming him back to Dromard in the future.
Monthly Members Draw: Congratulations to the winners of our Monthly Members Draw for May. The €500 prize went to Susan Hourican, Fostra and the three €100 prizes were won by Ozzie Reilly, Ballyduffy, Sean and Claire Donnelly, Legga and Alan McNerney, Carrigallen. Thank you to all our members for your continued support.
Resumption of Masses in Legga and Moyne Churches from Monday 29 June: Mass resumes in Legga Church on Monday evening 29 June at 7pm. Given the ongoing need to adhere to two-metre physical distancing, the capacity of the churches will be reduced and other changes are necessary to ensure compliance with the current health guidelines. All those attending Mass are asked to cooperate with the ushers who will be on duty in both churches to ensure the safety of those attending. It is important to note that weekday masses have been designated to fulfil the Sunday obligation and so attendance at a Wednesday or Friday evening Mass has the same status as the Sunday Mass. The final online Mass from the Parochial house was broadcast on Saturday evening. Thank you to Fr Pat for making this service available to parishioners and those living further afield during the pandemic. Thanks also to Kevin Hourican, Peter Masterson, Susan Murphy and Breege Reilly for all their work behind the scenes.
