The Brawl in the Hall Fundraiser
Last Saturday night, the GAA Sports Complex in Abbeyfeale staged the eagerly awaited 'Brawl in the Hall', white collar boxing fundraiser between Fr. Caseys and Mountcollins GAA Clubs. In total ten bouts took place on the night, nine between amateur GAA players and one exhibition bout between two qualified boxers. We were delighted by the massive crowd that attended on the night and amazed by the success of the event.
Massive credit must be given to all the boxers who put on an amazing display on the night. They are all a credit to their clubs and we owe them a great debt. Ger Long and his team had everyone in peak condition and they administered a very professional contest on the night. Both club committees left no stone unturned in their preparations and they should be extremely proud of the outcome. The list of people to thank is endless. Without everyone's co-operation this night would not have been possible. We are extremely grateful to everyone who helped out.
Sponsorship from local businesses was key to making this fundraiser a success. We are extremely thankful to Abbeyfeale Credit Union, Bridge Street Pharmacy, P&B Bloodstock, Abbey Tyres, Leens Hotel, O'Sullivans Bar, Superbites, Adrenalin Sports, AIB Abbeyfeale and Feale Oil who sponsored fights on the night. Thanks also to the numerous businesses who took out adverts in our fight programme and to Feale Print & Design who produced the lovely programmes for the event. Lastly we owe a big thanks to the people of Abbeyfeale, Mountcollins and the surrounding areas that attended the event and helped make this fundraiser a great success.
The Brawl in the Hall - Fight Summary
The following is a summary of all ten bouts for the brawl in the hall fundraiser. Abbeyfeale fought out of the blue corner while Mountcollins were selected to fight out of the red corner. The first fight of the night saw Abbeyfeales Joseph O'Flaherty take on Paddy Murphy of Mountcollins. This fight started at a very high tempo with both boxers going on the attack from the off. Both boxers had their spells of dominance in a gruelling three round contest but it was Joseph who eventually emerged victorious having successfully landed more head shots. The second fight on the card matched Timmy Gleeson from Abbeyfeale against Batt Dillane from Mountcollins. From the start it was Timmy who took control of this bout, cleverly getting his shots off then weaving away from danger. Batt never gave up trying but Timmy was rightfully announced as the victor to give the blue corner a 2-0 lead. Fight three paired Seamus Lenihan of Abbeyfeale against Kieran Quirke. Seamus went into this contest as the underdog but after round one it was obvious Seamus was ready to upset the form guide. Both boxers fought tirelessly throughout the three rounds and in the end only 1 point separated the fighters on the scorecard. Unfortunately this time victory went to the red corner but Seamus can hold his head high after a fierce battle. Fight four saw Eamon O'Flaherty fighting for Abbeyfeale against Jason Brosnan from Mountcollins. Once more the crowd were amazed by the level of effort shown as neither fighter was willing to let their side down. Both boxers had spells of dominance but it was Jason who eventually won the bout the level the tie on the night. Fight five was probably the best amateur boxing display of the night as Abbeyfeales Michael Roche faced Hubert Kloskowski. Both boxers showed great technic and strength in a high tempo affair. With one minute remaining in the final round the fight was stopped after Michael picked up a cut to his left eye. It was heart-breaking for Michael who up this this point had slightly shaded proceedings. The red corner now led 3-2 and so it was left to the Knocknasna Knockout to get Abbeyfeale back in this contest. Fight six saw Gerard O'Connor fighting out of the blue corner while William Brosnahan fought out of the red corner. The two veterans of the night produced a brilliant display with both fighters giving their all. Like previous bouts each fighter had periods of dominance and the crowd was left of the edge of their seat throughout. In the end Gerard emerged victorious to level the contest at 3-3. Fight seven was one of closely contested fights of the night between Abbeyfeales Sean O'Connell and Mike Dillane from Mountcollins. Sean controlled the early stages but Mike fought back well to earn himself a draw, the first tied fight of the night. Fight eight saw Simas Makcinshas take on Gerry Dillane of Mouncollins. A powerful right hook from Simas which connected with Gerry midway through the fight sent the Mountcollins man the canvas and ended the contest. The blue corner had won by knockout and Abbeyfeale lead proceedings once more. The ninth fight paired our female boxers against each other. Maura Collins fought for Abbeyfeale while Mary Dillane represented Mountcollins. Anyone expecting a tame affair were soon disappointed as both ladies went in search of victory from the first bell. This was another bout two close to call and once more the judges called the contest a draw. This concluded the amateur contest with Abbeyfeale leading on the scorecard by 5-4. The final fight of the night was an exhibition fight between two qualified boxers. Noel Burns fought out of the blue corner while Andrew Murphy fought from the red corner. Being an exhibition bout no winner would be announced but this did not deter both fighters putting on a great display. Andrew seemed to shade the opening round it was Noel who finished the strongest. It was a fitting end to a great night's entertainment.
Limerick Senior Footballers
The Limerick Senior footballers travelled to Ruislip last weekend to face London in round six of the National Football League. Despite a second half comeback from London, Limerick held on to claim their fifth victory of the campaign, winning by 1-09 to 1-08. Limerick continue to top the Division 4 table but will not be guaranteed promotion unless they get a result in their final group game. Limericks next outing will be on Sunday April 7th against Clare in Cusack Park, Ennis. Fr. Caseys GAA Club wish all involved the very best of luck especially Paudie, John, Derry and Mike.
Limerick U21 Footballers
The Limerick U21 Footballers will face Cork this Wednesday night in the semi-final of the Munster Championship in the Gaelic Grounds, Limerick. Fr. Caseys have two players on the panel namely James O'Mara and Shane O'Connor. We wish both players and the entire Limerick team the very best of luck in this very important game. Cork will undoubtedly start as favourites, especially after securing a narrow victory over Kerry in the quarter-final stage. With just 60 minutes of football separating Limerick from a place in the Munster final hopefully they can produce a big display and claim victory on the night. The throw in time is 7.30pm.
