St. Patrick's G.A.A. Club Notes

September 19, 2012
Congratulations to all involved in the club with the victory in Ballingarry last Saturday evening when our senior footballers put in a great performance to secure our senior status. It was great to see the big support that came out to see this game. Before the game started one minute silence was had in memory of the late John McDonogh R.I.P. Both teams were level at break 1-06 each with Eoin Hanrahan opening our account with a point from a 45mitre free in the first minute of the game and then within a minute we were four points up when Jason Mullins hit the back of the net with a well taken goal things were looking good at this stage but St. Senan's responded with a goal from an 45 mitre free in the sixth minute of the game, the teams were level 1-01 each when once again we left the West side in for a point from play John Mullane put us in front again from a well taken point from play but four unanswered points from St.Senan's left us three points behind with five minutes left of the first half, Eoin Hanrahan second point of the game closed the margin to two in the twenty eight minute of the opening half St.Senan's again increase the margin to three when they pointed from a close in free to leave the scoreline at 1-06 to 1-03 going into injury time but Saints and John Mullane had the teams level when John pointed over three points (two from frees) to leave the teams at 1-06 each. In the second half St.Senan's took control of this relegation game and hit us for five unanswered points but things were not looking good for us we introduces Padraig Reale and Tony Quigley and the changes made all the difference we were five points down going into the last ten minutes but a cracker of a goal by our super sub Padraig Reale brought the relegation fight that was needed by us to win this relegation game, on a high now we kept St.Senan's scoreless for the reminder of the game while we got the upper hand Michael Kelleher kicked over one of his rare points which close the margin to one point 1-11 to 2-10 and when captain Dermot Phelan brought us level with a great point brought our supporters and team panel up a gear John Mullane put us in front for the first time since opening nine minutes and going into injury time Dermot Phelan put us two points ahead with his second point of the game in a very tense final few minutes and when referee Donal Enright blew the final whistle we ran out winners by two points 2-10 to St. Senan's 1-11. Man of the match performances came from our minors players playing in the forward line was Gearoid Hegarty at full forward and Jason Mullins at corner forward. The delighted smiling faces of the players and management team and supporters when the final whistle blew was great to witness and with this victory made up for the disappointed senior football campaign gone by. Our scorers on the night were John Mullane (0-05) (0-03f) Jason Mullins (1-00) Padraig Reale (1-00) Eoin Hanrahan (0-02) (0-02f) Dermot Phelan (0-02) and Michael Kelleher (0-01). On this Saturday evening at 4pm our senior footballers will take on Galbally in the all county football league semi final at Bruff now that the pressure is of in staying up senior we can now try and make up for that defeat Galbally did to us in the last round of the senior football championship. On this Sunday between 2pm and 4pm the club are holding a sports day for our underage players at Rhebogue which will include a dog show, tug of war, target practice kick & puck, treasure hunt and many more events the club bar will also be opened for the All Ireland football final all are welcome to attend. All at the club was sad to hear of the sudden death of John McDonogh, John when a student at St. Munchin's College was invited by the late Fr. Gerard Mc Namee to join St. Patrick's. John gave outstanding service to our club in hurling and football winning numerous City and County medals in under 16 and minor level. John was a member of the Limerick team that won the 1958 All Ireland minor hurling title the team and panel that day included John and four other St. Patrick's players Paddy Cobbe, Jimmy Guinane, Con Connolly (R.I.P.) and Pat Doyle (R.I.P.). John gave great displays for our club in senior hurling and football but a County senior medal eluded John as he played in four County senior finals in hurling in 1959 and 1966 and in football in 1964 and 1967. In the 1959 St. Patrick's raised the hopes of regaining the County senior hurling title in the opening engagement we drew with Treaty Sarsfields 4-05 each and although beaten in the replay by the Thomondgate lads we rallied back into contention via the losers group. Pallasgreen proved no match for us and then Kilmallock who were freely tipped as likely champions were toppled in a trill packed quarter final at Bruff. A brilliant display if goalkeeping by Paddy Cunneen and some great scoring by ace marksman Vivian Cobbe were the main factors that upset the Kilmallock aspirations. Patrickswell provided the opposition in the semi final and although they fought gamely to the bitter end we were always in command and deservedly earned their passage to the final. Cappamore were again our opponents in the final which was played on the 30th of August, one of the few County senior hurling finals played so early in the year. Once again we failed dismally to produce the goods on the big occasion and Cappamore powered by the Ryan brothers Liam and Seamus two clerical students, sailed serenely to a most emphatic 2-08 to 0-04 victory. On that day John's teammates were, in goals Paddy Cunneen, Eric Rochford, Joe Phelan, Tim O Connor, John McDonogh, Joe Elliott, Tom Troy, Noel Phelan, Paddy Cobbe, Gerard Phelan, Eric Ryan, Vivian Cobbe, Thomas Quilligan, Paddy McCarthy, Mick Kennedy, Paddy Rainsford, Tom Cross, Anthony O Sullivan, Jim McNamara and John Riordan. played with John played for many years with the Limerick senior hurlers but the most memorable game being the 1966 Munster senior hurling semi final at Killarney when Limerick lost narrowly to Cork, On moving to Bruree to live and work in the late 1970's John played for some years with Bruree. The Club was well represented at the guard of honour at the removal from Ballyingarry to Bruree with Paddy Quilligan, Jack Sheehan, Eamonn Phelan, Tim O Connor, Larry Cross, Paddy Rainsford, J.J. Kenneally, Eric Ryan and Vincent Phelan. Ar dheis Dé go Raibh a anam dílis Sean.

Thanking You

Eamonn Phelan P.R.O.
