Keaveney, Malachy

The late Malachy Keaveney One of the county's most popular gardai died suddenly at his Akseaton home. Malachy Keaveney, 63, had been among the longest serving district sergeants in an Garda Siochana at the time of his retirement in 2000. Having served 24 years a sergeant, most of which was spent at Askeaton, he had previously served in Askeaton as a garda, and was also stationed at other times in Mary Street and Henry Street, both Limerick; Kiltyclogher in Leitrim, Shannon and Sixmilebridge, both Clare. A noted sportsman in his day, Mr Keaveney own Senior Football Championship medals with his native Castlerea in Roscommon and also with Askeaton (1972), the last occasion on which Askeaton won the county title. He was also a competitive golfer and played out of both Newcastle and West and Ballybunion. Mr Keaveney took ill at his home in Askeaton and died soon afterwards. In a tribute, Supt Joe Roe, Askeaton, mourned the loss of a true friend with whom he had the pleasure of serving for many years. Guards of honour were formed by members of an Garda Siochana, Askeaton/Ballsteen GAA and golfing friends following Requiem Mass at St Mary's Church, Askeaton. The chief celebrant at the funeral mass was Fr Sean O'Longaigh, PP, with assistance from Fr SEan Murray, CC. Burial was to Beagh cemetery, Ballysteen. Sgt Keaveney is survived by his wife Betty; sons Hugh and Mal; daughter Eimear and her fiancee John; daughter in law Julia; grandchildren Meadbh, Aine and Matthew; brothers in law, sisters in law, nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and a wide circle of friends.
