Newcastle West claimed their first win in the Limerick senior hurling championship since 1988 last night (Thursday) as they saw off Kildimo-Pallaskenry by 1-21 to 2-11 at Mick Neville Park.

The scores of Cathal Hayes and Con Hayes helped the Magpies to edge a 0-12 to 1-8 at the halfway stage in Rathkeale and they’d push in the second-half despite conceding a penalty early in the second-half.

Kildimo-Pallaskenry switched county man Kyle Hayes from defence to the edge of the square after the change of ends and the five-time All-Star would soon be impeded in the square for Shaun Barry to fire in the resultant penalty.

Newcastle West responded in the best possible fashion, sending over three points unanswered before Cathal Hayes rattled the net for them.

A Cathal Hayes free them put seven between the sides with as many minutes remaining in normal time, leaving two late frees as consolation for Kildimo-Pallaskenry.

Elsewhere in the third round of the Limerick SHC last night, Na Piarsaigh were 3-17 to 0-10 winners over Ahane while Monaleen edged out Doon by 1-24 to 3-17.
