Senior Football

Our senior side were in action on Friday night as they hosted Fr Caseys in the second round of the West Senior Football League. We were very slow out of the blocks and conceded an early goal as we trailed by 1-5 to 0-1 at the break with out only score coming from a David O’Shaughnessy free. David was the only player to score before the half with the Abbeyfeale side dominating the game leading 2-9 to 0-2 at the half. However, Ballysteen were like a new team in the second half. Caseys opened the second half scoring but from here the boys took over. Three quickfire points were followed by a David O’Shaughnessy goal from the penalty spot after Sean Whelan was fouled. A Shane Hallinan point was then followed by a goal as he expertly fisted home from Mark Ranahan’s goalbound shot. That left it at 2-10 to 2-7 in Caseys favour at the final waterbreak. We got the final two scores of the evening but it would prove too late as Caseys held on for a one point 2-10 to 2-9 win.

Up next for the seniors is a tie against Rathkeale on Tuesday night in the Bog Garden at 7.30pm. Again, 100 spectators are permitted with social distancing protocols to be adhered to.

Team: Brian Neville, Eddie Murphy, Kevin McMahon, Jason Daly, John O’Shaughnessy, Shane Gallagher, Matthew O’Meara, James O’Meara (0-1), Jamie O’Sullivan, Sean Whelan, Pa Ranahan, Sam Duggan, William O’Meara, David O’Shaughnessy (1-5, 1p, 4f), Shane Hallinan (1-2). Subs: Mark Ranahan (0-1), Cillian Ferris, Eoin Condon.

Junior Football

Our Junior footballer picked up their first win of the season as they beat Mountcollins 1-12 to 1-8 in a thriller in Ballysteen last Wednesday. We got off to a brilliant start kicking the opening three scores of the game. But the visitors replied with 1-4 on the trot to take control of the game. As he did against St Senans the previous week, centre-back Eddie Murphy was on the end of a flowing move as he smashed the ball into the to corner to leave it 1-3 to 1-4 in Mountcollins’ favour. Corner back John Blackwell levelled the game shortly after the restart as the teams went toe to toe. Mountcollins held a 1-8 to 1-6 lead at the final waterbreak but they wouldn’t score again as Paudie Vaughan eventually pulled us clear with ten to play. Six unanswered down the stretch secured the win while a heroic save from stand in goalkeeper Cathal Anglim kept us in the game with the teams deadlocked late on.

This Wednesday, we play Athea in the third round of the West Junior League in Ballysteen at 7.30pm. As with the senior game, 100 spectators are permitted.

Team: Cathal Anglim, Eoin Condon, Alan O’Shaughnessy, John Blackwell (0-1), Mick Boyce, Eddie Murphy (1-0), Jonathan Hartigan, David Holland, Paudie Vaughan (0-2), Jack Neville (0-7, 4f), Sam Duggan, Dec Ryan, Kevin Barry, Jamie Moran, Fiachra Butler (0-2).
