Fixtures:

The senior junior hurlers get their campaign underway this Sunday morning when they welcome Newcastlewest to Coolcappagh for the opening round of the County League. The game throws in at 12pm. On Tuesday, the senior footballers meet Gerard Griffins in round two of the west senior football league in Coolcappagh at 7.30.

Allianz League:

Best wishes to Darragh Treacy and his Limerick senior football teammates who make the long journey up west this weekend to take on Derry in the Allianz League Division 3 semi-final. Due to the condensed nature of the 2021 campaign there will be no league final this year with both semi final winners sharing the honours of national league champions. But the bigger prize on offer for the winners is promotion to Division two in 2022. Victory on Saturday would be a huge achievement for the team and would be the perfection foundation ahead of the upcoming Munster Championship quarter final with Waterford.

St. Kieran’s GAA History:

Friday May 21 was the 49th anniversary of Carrigkerry winning the 1971 County Junior Football Championship in the Gaelic Grounds, Limerick. The game was played on that date in 1972 as the championship was not finalised in the 1971 calendar. In a pulsating county final played under torrential rainfall the team overcame the challenge of east Limerick champions Pallasgreen 2.8 to 1.5. The victory was extra special as it was the first occasion a county title had come to the combined parishes. At the final whistle team captain Johnny Kenneally was surrounded by enthusiastic and joyous supporters delighted with the county title. The team on the day was Mike O’ Connor, Haulie Foley, Moss O’ Connor, Maurice Windle, Johnny Kenneally, Tommy Cregan, John Windle, Paddy D O’ Connor, Stephen Kenneally, Aidan Murphy, Jim Bourke, Tim Crowley, Tommy Greaney, John Harnett, Tommy Upton, Tommy Kelly, Sean McCarthy. Patsy Nolan, Chris O’ Connor, Denis Greaney, Stephen Murphy. Trainer Donie Flynn. This win was the start of a great era of success for the team which became known as St. Kieran’s in 1972.

St. Kieran’s will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its formation in 2022. A committee has been established to publish the history of gaelic games within the Ardagh-Carrigkerry-Kilcolman-Coolcappagh area. The above win will form part of this history which will chronicle all grades and areas of the club. Work is continuing at present despite the continued Covid 19 restrictions and members who would like to contribute articles relating to the history of the club are asked to do so as soon as possible as late arrivals may not be included.
