Leitrim kept their promotion hopes in Division 4 alive after seeing off Laois late on to record a 2-14   to 0-18 victory in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Keith Beirne’s goal on 13 minutes saw the hosts hit the front for the first time and they’d stretch the lead out to three before Laois sent over frees via Paul Kingston and Evan O’Carroll that left it at 1-8 to0-9 come the interval.

Andy Moran’s men enjoyed the perfect restart when Pearce Dolan smashed to the O’Moore men’s but net, but the visitors were level within 15 minutes as Kingston, Mark Barry and Brian Byrne all found their range.

It set-up an intriguing closing quarter and, in the end, it was the points of Mark Plunkett and marksman Beirne (45) that got the Connacht men over the line to leave them in the promotion picture heading into next weekend’s seventh and final round of the Allianz Football League.

In a further blow, the added minutes also saw Laois losing ace attacker Eoin Lowry to a nasty injury in which he had to be stretched off the field of play.
