Fitzgerald retires
September 28, 2006

Ian Fitzgerald of Laois
Laois footballer Ian Fitzgerald has opted to bring an end to a glittering inter county career following his decision to retire from the game completely.
The news is a massive blow to both his club Portlaoise and the Laois squad. Fitzgerald is only 29 but feels the demands of the modern game have become too much as he concentrates on his dental practices.
Fitzgerald was the longest serving member of this year's Laois squad, having made his debut against Kildare in 1996, while he is also a former star of Laois underage football.
The Portlaoise clubman was part of the Laois under-21 side that won the Leinster title in 1998 and he was unfortunate to lose out on a Leinster minor medal in 1995 when it took three games to separate the O'Moore County and eventual All-Ireland winners Westmeath.
In 2003, he had the honour of captaining Laois to the Leinster senior football title, while he has three SFC titles with Portlaoise.
