The 2021 Laois SFC got off to a sensational start last night when Courtwood recorded a surprise 1-9 to 1-7 victory over Portlaoise.

Danny Luttrell scored 1-5 for Eddie Kinsella's underdogs, who narrowly avoided relegation last year. Luttrell and Paul Cahillane traded goals in the first half as Courtwood took a 1-7 to 1-4 lead into the half-time break.

Portlaoise, who were dethroned as county champions last year, reduced the deficit to the minimum after the restart, but were undermined by poor shooting as Courtwood went on to register a famous win thanks to late points from Luttrell and Paul O'Flynn.

The victory puts Courtwood into the winners' group, while 'The Town' will get a chance to redeem themselves in the losers' section.
