Mayo's Cora Staunton celebrates with Fiona McHale

Mayo legend Cora Staunton sees the vote to combine the Women's Gaelic Players Association (WGPA) and the GPA as a huge step towards equality in ladies football.

On Monday evening at Extraordinary General Meetings (EGMs) of both the Gaelic Players Association (GPA) and the Women’s Gaelic Players Association (WGPA), inter-county players voted overwhelmingly to combine the two associations into one 4,000-member players’ association.

The new National Executive Committee will convene in January and, speaking to RTÉ’s Morning Ireland from Perth, Staunton sees it as “monumental day”.

"It's hugely significant and monumental day for both associations," said the 11-time All Star.

"With the overwhelming vote, the players believe strongly in equality and looking for one association.

"The one organisation... we always say we are stronger together. With over 4,000 members, I think there will be a stronger voice."
