Clare edged out Kilkenny by 0-19 to 0-16 in Ennis this afternoon to move two points clear of the Cats at the top of the Allianz Hurling League Division 1 Group A table.
Three David Fitzgerald points helped the Banner men to lead by 0-11 to 0-9 at the halfway stage and, after the change of ends, a couple of TJ Reid frees and a John Donnelly point would see the teams’ level on 0-15 apiece come the 57th minute.
Fitzgerald nudged the hosts in front again and another from Donnelly made for an intriguing finish at Cusack Park where Brian Lohan’s side were able to dig their deepest late on.
Aidan McCarthy’s free with two minutes left in regulation would be backed up by Diarmuid Ryan sailing over two points from play in the space of a minutes.
Those scores would prove enough for Clare to keep their unbeaten record intact, as their Leinster opponents’ efforts to bag a late goal came up short in the end.
