Kieran McGeeney is on the look-out for a new Kildare selector after Niall Carew stepped down.

A statement on the Kildare GAA website reads: 'Niall Carew has stepped down as a Kildare Under 21 and Senior selector with immediate effect.

'Carew has been giving his position much consideration following the recent sudden death of his father and has now informed manager Kieran McGeeney that he will not be taking up the dual role in 2013.

'Niall Carew has been a selector with Kildare since Kieran McGeeney took the reigns in 2008.

'The St. Kevins clubman worked very closely with the forwards in recent seasons and has played a major role in Kildare reaching 4 All Ireland quarter finals and one semi-final in the last 5 seasons.

'He feels, however, that the time is now right to step down and give Kieran the opportunity to freshen up his management team for 2013.

'Carew would like to take the opportunity to thank the players and management that he has worked with over the course of the last 5 years and wishes Kieran McGeeney and his team every success for 2013.

'He has no doubt that Kildare has the best manager in the business and it is only a matter of time before they win some much desired and deserved silverware.

'Carew will welcome the break from football for the next while, but is unlikely to stay out of coaching and management for too long.'
