Three-in-a-row chasing Dr Crokes were pushed all the way by St Kieran's in the first round of the Kerry SFC in Killarney on Saturday evening.
Ultimately, five points from Colm Cooper (three frees) and a David Shaw goal proved decisive as the 2017 All-Ireland club champions edged victory on a 1-18 to 2-13 scoreline. Adam Barry matched Cooper in the scoring stakes, while Aidan Breen and Eddie Horan raised green flags, but St Kieran's still fell agonisingly short of causing an upset.
Elsewhere, Bryan Sheehan notched seven points as South Kerry overcame Kenmare Shamrocks by 1-14 to 0-13 in Caherciveen, while James O'Donoghue bagged 1-3 for Killarney Legion in a dramatic 2-14 to 2-12 victory over Rathmore in Rathbeg.
Donnchadh Walsh and Darran O'Sullivan scored 1-1 and 0-5 respectively as Mid-Kerry accounted for An Ghaeltacht by 2-14 to 0-10 in Beaufort, while St. Brendan's were 0-16 to 1-9 winners over West Kerry in their preliminary round meeting at Austin Stack Park last night.
