Waterford SHC: Gunners to meet Lismore in decider
September 28, 2009
Ballygunner and Lismore will face off in the Waterford SHC final following their respective semi-final wins over Mount Sion and Ballyduff Upper yesterday.
Ballygunner beat fierce city rivals Mount Sion by 1-15 to 0-14 at Walsh Park to qualify for their first final since 2005. Former county star Paul Flynn bagged 1-2 in the opening seven minutes to give the winners a dream start, but Sion rallied with scores from Ken McGrath, Martin O'Neill, Chris Ryan, Paul Hammond and Sean Ryan to trail by 1-6 to 0-8 at half-time.
Two points from Ian Galgey had the teams level with nine minutes to go, but three superb scores from Tommy Power saw Ballygunner through.
In the other semi-final at Fraher Field, Lismore produced a strong second half showing to overcome Ballyduff Upper by 1-22 to 2-12. Ballduff were level on 1-9 to 0-12 at half-time thanks to a Brendan Hannon goal and four pointed frees from goalkeeper Adrian Power, but points on the restart from the Shanahans, Dan and Maurice, a goal from Padraig Prendergast, had eased Lismore into a 1-16 to 1-10 lead by the 40th minute.
A Sean Cunningham goal brought Ballyduff back into it, but further scores from Maurice Shanahan and Stephen O'Keeffe saw Lismore safely through.
