Portumna appoint new manager

March 21, 2008
Newly-crowned All-Ireland club hurling champions Portumna have named former player Johnny Kelly as their new manager in succession to Jimmy Heverin. Heverin guided the Galway club to their second All-Ireland triumph in three years last Monday, having previously stated that it would be his last game in charge. He had been at the helm for three years. Kelly served as one of Heverin's selectors, and the outgoing manager is confident that he will prove a success in his new role. "I'm sure that Johnny will do an excellent job," he said. "Johnny certainly knows what the game is all about. The fact that he was involved as a selector for the last 12 months will be a huge help to him, and he also has plenty of experience of looking after underage teams."
