Tyrone hold on to relegate Monaghan as Salthill win moves Dubs top

Tyrone were able to hold off a spirited comeback from Monaghan tonight and take a massive stride towards safety in Division 1 of the Allianz Football League.

Played in soaking wet conditions at Healy Park, Omagh, the Red Hands’ 1-19 to 2-13 victory over their neighbours moves them on to six points along with Mayo and Kerry while also consigning the Farney men to Division 2 for the first time in a decade.

The visitors couldn’t build sufficiently enough on the early goal that Jack McCarron bagged for them, as their neighbours a 0-9 to 1-2 lead before a cooly composed Darragh Canavan provided a soccer-style finish to the net for them on 26 minutes.

That helped to send Tyrone in at the break with a 1-11 to 1-6 advantage and they’d add to it after the change of ends via the points of Kieran McGeary and Ciaran Daly.

Vinny Corey’s men battled back from there with points from Conor McManus (2) and McCarron before a Killian Lavelle goal had the margin down to two with 13 minutes left in normal time.

A mark from McManus would make it a one-point game headed into seven minutes of injury-time where the late scores of Darren McCurry and Joe Oguz would eventually settle the derby in the home side’s favour.

Earlier in the day, Dublin dealt Galway their third loss of the campaign after coming away from Salthill with a 0-22 to 0-14 victory.

The All-Ireland champions were in impressive form as Con O’Callaghan starred for them up front with 0-9 over the 70 minutes.

O’Callaghan, Killian McGinnis and Brian Fenton were among those on the scoresheet in the first-half as the visitors took in a 0-10 to 0-6 interval lead and they added a dozen to their tally to leave themselves within a win of returning to the Division 1 final.
