Galway ensured themselves topflight Allianz Hurling League status for next year thanks to a 1-23 to 1-15 victory over Dublin in Salthill this afternoon.

Despite losing skipper Conor Whelan, Daithi Burke and Jack Grealish (two yellows) to red cards in this one, Henry Shefflin’s men were still able to see out the win after an impressive final quarter that saw them outscoring their capital counterparts by 0-10 to 0-1.

Whelan and Donal Burke (penalty) had traded goals in first-half, as the home side went in leading 1-10 to 1-8, but Burke’s frees saw Dublin edging ahead in the second-half.

The scoreline read 1-14 apiece when the visitors saw Ronan Hayes dismissed on red card and, from there, the Tribesmen struck over nine unaswered points with Conor Cooney, who finished with 0-11, very much to the fore for them.

While they bagged the win which sees them move up to second, Galway are now set to be without suspended paid Whelan and Burke for next Saturday’s showdown with Limerick at Pearse Stadium.
